Officer Like Quality (OLQ) Board Practice Exam

This item tests who has formal custody of the grand master and master keys and how duplicates are controlled. These keys unlock all locks, so strict accountability and limited distribution are essential to prevent loss or misuse.

The Supply Officer is the official responsible for the ship’s supply chain and property accountability, including the lock-and-key system. Therefore, custody of the grand master and master keys typically rests with the Supply Officer. A duplicate copy may be held by the Duty Supply Officer, but only if the Supply Officer designates that person in writing. The written designation creates a documented chain of authority, ensuring there is a clear record of who can access the keys and under what circumstances.

The CO and the Duty Security Officer aren’t the default custodians for these keys because policy assigns primary control to the supply chain to maintain strict oversight. Only with written authorization from the Supply Officer does another designated officer legitimately hold a duplicate, preserving tight control over the most sensitive access.
